Harley-Davidson® has used toothed belt final drive on a huge number of motorcycles over the years.
Compared with a conventional motorcycle chain, a drive belt is clean, relatively quiet and requires very little routine maintenance. A good belt can also cover a substantial mileage before replacement becomes necessary.
That doesn't mean it should be ignored.
The final drive belt has to transfer the engine's torque from the gearbox to the rear wheel every time the motorcycle accelerates. Its condition, tension and alignment are therefore important — and a damaged belt can eventually leave you at the side of the road.
In this guide, we'll look at how Harley-Davidson® drive belts work, what causes them to wear or fail and what to look for when inspecting one.
The final drive system transfers power from the motorcycle's transmission to its rear wheel.
On a belt-drive Harley-Davidson®, a toothed pulley is fitted to the transmission output and another much larger pulley is attached to the rear wheel.
The drive belt connects the two.
As the transmission pulley rotates, its teeth engage with the teeth on the inside of the belt. The belt then turns the rear pulley and therefore the rear wheel.
It sounds simple, but the belt must cope with considerable forces.
Every hard acceleration, gear change and change in road speed places loads through the final drive.
A modern motorcycle drive belt isn't simply a strip of rubber.
Its construction uses several materials, each performing a different job.
The precise construction varies between manufacturers, but a typical high-strength drive belt contains tensile cords embedded within a flexible belt structure.
These cords provide much of the belt's strength and resistance to stretching.
The belt teeth are designed to engage accurately with the pulley teeth, while the outer materials protect the internal structure and allow the belt to flex repeatedly as it travels around the pulleys.
The result is a component that is relatively light but capable of transmitting substantial torque.
Both systems have advantages.
One of the biggest attractions of a belt drive is its low maintenance requirement.
A conventional chain needs regular lubrication and adjustment as it wears. Chain lubricant can also find its way onto wheels, bodywork and other parts of the motorcycle.
A drive belt doesn't require conventional chain lubricant.
It is also generally quieter in operation.
For a road motorcycle intended to cover significant distances, those characteristics make belt drive an attractive solution.
Normally, no.
A toothed final drive belt isn't a motorcycle chain and shouldn't be treated like one.
Applying chain lubricant, grease or other products to the belt isn't part of normal maintenance unless specifically required by the manufacturer of a particular system.
In fact, keeping the belt and pulleys clean and free from inappropriate chemicals and contamination is more important.
If you're unsure about a cleaning product, check that it is suitable for the belt material before using it.
There isn't a useful universal mileage at which every belt should automatically be replaced.
Drive belts can last a very long time when correctly adjusted, aligned and protected from damage.
Their lifespan is influenced by several factors, including:
A high-mileage belt in excellent condition may be preferable to a much newer belt that has suffered physical damage.
Inspection therefore matters more than simply looking at the odometer.
A proper inspection involves looking at the complete belt rather than only the section that's easiest to see.
The rear wheel may need to be rotated so the entire circumference can be examined.
Look at the belt teeth, edges and outer surface.

Not every superficial mark means the belt is about to fail, but structural damage deserves careful attention.
One of the hazards facing a belt drive is road debris.
A small stone can become trapped between the belt and a pulley.
The forces involved when that stone is pulled between the two can be considerable.
It may puncture or damage the belt, and the damage isn't always obvious until the belt is inspected closely.
This is one reason belt guards aren't merely decorative components.
They help reduce the opportunity for debris to reach vulnerable parts of the final drive.
A damaged or worn pulley can affect a perfectly good belt.
When inspecting the final drive, look at the condition of the pulley teeth and check for unusual wear or physical damage.
Foreign material trapped in a pulley should also be investigated.
Replacing a damaged belt without identifying what damaged it can result in the replacement suffering exactly the same fate.
A drive belt needs to operate within a specified tension range.
Too loose isn't good.
Too tight isn't good either.
Correct tension allows the belt to transmit power while accommodating the movement and geometry of the motorcycle's suspension and final drive.
The correct checking procedure varies between models.
Depending on the motorcycle, factors such as suspension position, load and measurement location can affect the specified belt deflection.
For that reason, generic advice such as “it should move about this much when you press it” isn't a substitute for the correct specification.
It's easy to assume that a tighter belt is safer because it can't slip.
That's not how a toothed belt drive works.
The teeth provide the positive drive between the belt and pulleys.
Excessive belt tension can unnecessarily load components associated with the transmission output, rear wheel and belt itself.
It can also become particularly important as the suspension moves through its travel.
The aim isn't to make the belt as tight as possible.
The aim is to make it correct.
The distance between the transmission pulley and rear-wheel pulley isn't necessarily effectively constant throughout suspension movement.
As the swingarm moves, the geometry of the final drive changes.
This is why belt-tension specifications and checking procedures should be followed for the particular motorcycle.
Changes to suspension height can also affect final-drive geometry.
If a motorcycle has been substantially lowered, raised or otherwise modified, belt adjustment deserves particular attention.
The rear wheel and final drive need to be correctly aligned.
If the wheel is misaligned, the belt may not track correctly on the pulley.
That can contribute to unusual edge wear and potentially shorten belt life.
Whenever rear-wheel alignment or belt tension is adjusted, both should be considered together rather than treating them as completely separate jobs.
Belt drives are generally quiet, but they aren't necessarily completely silent.
A belt can sometimes produce a slight sound as it engages with the pulley.
A new or suddenly developing squeal, chirp or other unusual noise deserves investigation, particularly if it coincides with recent rear-wheel work, belt adjustment or suspension changes.
Possible causes can include alignment, contamination, incorrect tension or pulley condition.
The noise itself doesn't automatically identify the problem.
A motorcycle final drive belt is a safety-critical transmission component.
It isn't something that should normally be patched, glued or otherwise improvised back into service after significant structural damage.
If a belt has suffered damage that makes its integrity questionable, replacement is the appropriate solution.
A roadside improvisation that might appear to hold a belt together isn't equivalent to restoring its original strength.
The belt itself is only part of the replacement cost.
On some motorcycles, accessing and replacing the final drive belt requires considerably more dismantling than its exposed position near the rear wheel might suggest.
Depending on the model, components around the primary drive, transmission or swingarm arrangement may need to be removed or disturbed.
The exact procedure varies considerably across Harley-Davidson® model families and generations.
This is one reason protecting and inspecting the existing belt makes sense.
A small piece of road debris can potentially lead to a repair involving significantly more labour than the price of the belt alone would suggest.
Some heavily modified Harley-Davidson® motorcycles are converted from belt to chain final drive.
This is particularly common in certain high-performance, competition or custom applications.
A chain drive can offer advantages where gearing needs to be changed frequently or where the motorcycle is being used in conditions that favour a chain system.
But that doesn't mean a chain is automatically an upgrade for every road motorcycle.
For normal road use, the cleanliness, quiet operation and low maintenance of a properly set-up belt drive are significant advantages.
The appropriate choice depends on what the motorcycle is being built to do.
Changing pulley sizes changes the final-drive ratio.
That can alter the relationship between engine speed and road speed.
It may also affect belt length requirements, adjustment range and potentially other systems on the motorcycle.
Final-drive gearing changes should therefore be considered as an engineering change rather than simply a cosmetic pulley swap.
Tyre replacement provides an excellent opportunity to examine the final drive.
With the motorcycle already being worked on, the belt and pulley can be inspected more thoroughly than during a quick visual check.
It's also an appropriate time to make sure everything is correctly aligned and adjusted when the rear wheel is refitted.
If a workshop is replacing a rear tyre, spotting belt damage at the same time can potentially prevent a breakdown later.
A drive belt should be inspected if you notice:
A belt failure isn't normally something that improves with further riding.
If significant damage is discovered, deal with it before it becomes a roadside problem.
Unlike an engine-oil change, belt replacement isn't simply a matter of draining something after a fixed period and starting again.
Condition is extremely important.
A well-maintained belt operating with correct tension and alignment can provide long service.
Conversely, one unfortunate encounter with a sharp piece of debris can damage a relatively new belt.
Regular inspection is therefore one of the most useful things an owner can do.
Harley-Davidson® belt final drive is simple from the rider's point of view, and that's one of its greatest advantages.
There is:
No chain to lubricate, relatively little routine adjustment and very little mess.
But low maintenance doesn't mean no maintenance.
The belt needs to be correctly tensioned and aligned, the pulleys need to remain in good condition, and the entire belt should be inspected periodically for physical damage.
Above all, don't assume that because a belt hasn't covered a particular mileage it must be healthy.
A few minutes spent inspecting the belt can be considerably cheaper than discovering a damaged one when you're miles from home.
