Changing the handlebars can alter the look and feel of a Harley-Davidson more than almost any other single modification. It can also make the bike considerably more comfortable, or considerably less comfortable, if the dimensions are wrong for the rider.
That is why choosing handlebars should not begin with appearance alone. Rise, width, pullback, grip position, clamp diameter and control compatibility all matter, as do the cables, brake line and wiring needed to reach the new position safely.

It can also change how the bike feels when manoeuvring at low speed or steering through bends. A wide bar generally gives more leverage, while a narrow or very tall bar can feel quite different even if it looks ideal on the bike.
The right choice therefore depends on both the motorcycle and the rider.
Handlebar listings normally quote several dimensions. They are useful, but only if you understand what they actually describe.
Rise is the vertical distance from the mounting area to the hand-control area. More rise generally places your hands higher.
Do not assume that two bars with the same quoted rise will put your hands in exactly the same place. Pullback and the angle of the uprights also affect the final position.
Width is usually the overall distance from one end of the bar to the other. Wider bars can provide more steering leverage and a more open riding position, but excessive width can make a bike awkward in tight spaces or place strain on the shoulders.
Narrower bars can create a compact look and may suit some riders better, but they reduce leverage and can introduce clearance issues with the tank or controls depending on the shape.
Pullback describes how far the grips sit behind the centreline of the mounting area. More pullback brings the grips towards the rider.
This can help a rider who feels stretched towards the bars, but too much can crowd the upper body and alter wrist angle.
Many Harley-Davidson handlebars use a 1-inch grip and control area, while some bars are thicker through the centre or use stepped sections. 1¼-inch bars are common on custom and touring applications, but the clamp area and control areas may still reduce to a different diameter.

If the current handlebars are uncomfortable, simply measuring them and buying something slightly taller is not always enough.

T-bars combine the bar and riser arrangement into a strong, direct-looking design. They are popular on performance-orientated builds and can give a firm, controlled feel.
Height and pullback vary considerably, so do not assume all T-bars create the same riding position.
Motocross-inspired bars are often used on performance-style Harley builds. They tend to be relatively wide with a more direct hand position and are commonly fitted with suitable risers.
They can provide good leverage, but the complete riser and bar combination needs to be considered when working out final height and reach.
Drag bars are generally low and fairly straight, producing a compact, purposeful appearance.

The handlebars are only one part of the final hand position. Riser height and pullback can change the result substantially.
A relatively low bar on tall risers may place the grips higher than a taller bar on short risers. Pullback risers can also move the entire assembly towards the rider.
When comparing options, consider the complete combination rather than one measurement in isolation.
There is no single ideal handlebar height for every rider.
A comfortable position normally allows the shoulders to remain relaxed, the elbows to retain some bend and the wrists to sit at a natural angle. Your arms should not feel as though they are supporting your body weight.
If the bars are too far forwards, the rider may round the shoulders and lean onto the grips. Too much pullback can have the opposite effect and make the cockpit feel cramped.
Very high bars can suit some riders perfectly, while others find them tiring over longer distances. Rider height, torso length, arm length, seat position and riding style all affect the result.
Before ordering, think about what happens when the steering is turned fully from lock to lock.
The switch housings, levers, master cylinder and mirrors need sufficient clearance from the fuel tank, fairing, screen and other components. Clearance that looks adequate with the bike pointing straight ahead may disappear at full lock.
Also check that the controls can be positioned at a comfortable angle without interfering with bends or welded sections of the bar.
This is one of the most important compatibility checks.
Older and many earlier Harley-Davidson models use a cable-operated throttle. Later models in various ranges use electronic throttle control, commonly referred to as throttle-by-wire.
A handlebar intended for throttle-by-wire applications needs the correct internal arrangement at the right-hand end for the electronic throttle sensor and wiring. A conventional cable-throttle bar may not be suitable.
Do not assume compatibility purely because the bar diameter is correct.
Changing handlebar height, width or pullback can change the required length of several components.

Some modest handlebar changes can be made using standard-length components if there is sufficient routing allowance. Larger changes often require longer replacements.

The front brake line must retain enough free movement throughout the complete steering range and suspension movement.
A brake hose that is pulled tight at full lock is not acceptable. Equally, an excessively long line should not be allowed to loop into a position where it can rub, snag or contact moving parts.
Use a correctly specified line and route it properly.
On cable-clutch models, taller or wider bars may require a longer clutch cable. On hydraulic-clutch models the same principle applies to the hydraulic line.
The line or cable must move freely throughout the steering range without tension or an excessively tight bend.
Many aftermarket handlebars are drilled or slotted to allow switch wiring to run internally. This creates a cleaner appearance but makes installation more involved.
Check that the bar is designed for internal wiring and that the holes are correctly positioned for your controls. Sharp edges should never be allowed to damage insulation.
Bars with tight bends can make pulling wiring through more difficult, particularly where connectors are large.
Some handlebars have dimples or relief areas to provide clearance for external wiring beneath the switch housings. Others are designed around internal wiring.
Control design varies by year and model, so the presence or absence of dimples can matter.
Again, a 1-inch diameter alone does not guarantee correct fitment.
Some bars have knurled sections where they contact the riser clamps. These can improve grip between the bar and clamp.
The spacing needs to suit the riser arrangement. On bars intended for a particular application this is usually accounted for, but it is worth checking when mixing universal bars and risers.
A 1¼-inch bar may still reduce to 1 inch at the hand controls and sometimes at the clamping section. Other designs use a larger clamp area and require matching risers.

If any one of those is wrong, the bar may not fit even though the headline description appears correct.
Changing risers can be an alternative to changing the handlebars, or both can be changed together.
Taller risers increase hand height. Pullback risers move the bar towards the rider. Different risers can also alter the appearance and stiffness of the front end.
Make sure the risers are suitable for the top yoke or upper clamp arrangement and the handlebar diameter being used. Fasteners, spacing and instrument mounting can also differ between models.
On Touring models and bikes with fairings, the bars need to clear the fairing, screen, instrument housing and controls throughout the steering range.
Bar changes can also alter the position of mirrors relative to the fairing.

The best Harley-Davidson handlebars are not necessarily the tallest, widest or most expensive. They are the ones that fit the motorcycle properly and put the rider's hands where they naturally need to be.
