The primary chain is one of those components that spends most of its life out of sight and, ideally, out of mind.
It transfers power from the engine to the clutch and transmission, working continuously whenever the engine is running.
Most owners don't give it much thought until the primary starts making an unfamiliar noise.
Then the questions begin.
Is the chain loose? Is it too tight? Is the tensioner worn? Is the compensator failing? Or is that noise completely normal?
Quick answer: The primary chain transfers drive from the engine sprocket to the clutch assembly on many Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Depending on the model and year, chain tension may be controlled by a manual adjustment system or an automatic tensioner. Excessive slack, excessive tension, wear or problems elsewhere in the primary can cause noise and other symptoms. The correct inspection and adjustment procedure depends on the motorcycle.
The important point is that a noisy primary doesn't automatically mean a bad primary chain.
