You turn the ignition on, press the starter and... nothing.
Or perhaps you hear a rapid clicking noise. The lights come on but the starter barely turns. Maybe the motorcycle started perfectly last week but, after sitting in the garage for a few days, the battery is flat again.
Starting problems are frustrating, but they're also among the most common electrical problems motorcycle owners encounter.
The battery is an obvious suspect, but it isn't always the culprit.
A weak battery, poor connection, charging problem or unwanted electrical drain can produce very similar symptoms. Replacing the battery without identifying the underlying cause can therefore result in exactly the same problem a few weeks later.
This guide explains what to look for and how to approach the problem logically.

If you're not comfortable working around batteries, electrical systems or a running motorcycle, have the fault investigated professionally.

The symptoms can help narrow the search, but don't assume that a battery is healthy simply because the lights illuminate.
Starting an engine requires considerably more current than operating the instruments or lights.
A sluggish starter is commonly associated with low battery charge, a deteriorating battery or excessive resistance in the high-current connections.
Check the battery state and connections before assuming the starter motor itself has failed.
Repeated clicking when the starter button is pressed often occurs when battery voltage falls too far under the heavy load of the starter circuit.
That makes the battery and its connections sensible first checks.
It doesn't automatically prove the battery needs replacing.
A single click can have several causes.
The battery may still be unable to supply sufficient current, but problems elsewhere in the starter circuit are also possible.
This is where testing becomes much more useful than replacing parts by guesswork.
If pressing the starter produces no obvious response, broaden the investigation.
Depending on the motorcycle, things worth considering include the run/stop switch, ignition system, starter controls, fuses, connections and relevant safety interlocks as well as the battery.
This catches people surprisingly often.
The instruments illuminate. The headlight works. Therefore the battery must be fine.
Unfortunately, it isn't that simple.
A battery can retain enough energy to operate relatively modest electrical loads yet struggle badly when asked to turn the engine.
The starter motor places a much greater demand on the battery.
That's why observing battery behaviour under load can tell you considerably more than simply switching the ignition on.
There isn't one useful lifespan that applies to every motorcycle battery.
Battery life is affected by factors including:
A well-maintained battery can provide years of service, while one repeatedly allowed to become deeply discharged may deteriorate much sooner.
Age is useful information, but condition matters more.
A motorcycle doesn't necessarily stop consuming electricity when the ignition is switched off.
Depending on the model and equipment fitted, there may be systems that continue to draw a small amount of current.
The motorcycle may also have accessories such as:
A small normal draw may not matter on a motorcycle that's ridden regularly.
Leave the same bike unused for a prolonged period and the situation can be very different.
A weak battery makes the problem more noticeable still.
Starting a large-capacity V-twin requires a meaningful amount of electrical energy.
The charging system then has to replace that energy.
If the motorcycle is repeatedly started, ridden only a short distance and switched off again, it may not spend enough time running under suitable conditions to restore everything used during starting.
Over time, the battery can gradually lose charge despite the motorcycle being used regularly.
So: “I ride it every week” doesn't necessarily mean the battery is receiving enough charging time.
How the bike is used matters.
Check that the connections are secure and in good condition.
A poor high-current connection can cause starting symptoms that look remarkably similar to a failing battery.
Don't concentrate solely on the positive side of the circuit.
The return path is equally important.
A poor earth connection can cause slow cranking, intermittent behaviour and other confusing electrical symptoms.
Look for obvious damage, looseness or corrosion where inspection is possible without unnecessary dismantling.
Pay particular attention if accessories have recently been installed or other electrical work has been carried out.
Workshop Tip: If a starting problem appeared immediately after work was carried out on the motorcycle, start by checking the area that was disturbed. Coincidences happen—but a loose connection is considerably cheaper to investigate than a starter motor.
A multimeter is one of the most useful tools for investigating battery problems.
But a voltage reading needs context.
A battery's resting voltage can give an indication of its state of charge, but it doesn't by itself prove that the battery can deliver the current required to start the motorcycle.
A battery may appear reasonably healthy without a significant load and then suffer a substantial voltage drop when the starter is operated.
That's why proper battery assessment may include both state-of-charge checks and load or conductance testing.
If you're following numerical voltage specifications, use the figures appropriate to the battery type and the motorcycle's service information rather than relying on one generic number from the internet.
Testing a heavily discharged battery and immediately declaring it faulty can be misleading.
Where appropriate, charge it using a charger suitable for the particular battery chemistry, then assess its condition.
This is especially important because not every motorcycle battery uses the same technology.
Traditional lead-acid, AGM and lithium batteries have different characteristics and charging requirements.
Never assume a charger is suitable simply because its leads fit the battery terminals.
Check the charger's instructions and battery manufacturer's requirements.
The terms are sometimes used interchangeably, but the intended use can differ.
A conventional charger is primarily designed to recharge a battery.
A maintenance charger is designed to monitor and maintain an appropriate battery over a longer period.
For a motorcycle that spends weeks unused, a suitable maintenance charger can be extremely useful.
But it shouldn't be used to disguise an underlying fault.
If a previously healthy motorcycle suddenly needs to be connected to a charger every night to start the following morning, something deserves investigation.
This is the point where diagnosis becomes important.
There are three broad questions to answer:
Answering those questions systematically is far better than repeatedly charging the battery and hoping the problem disappears.

A motorcycle with a healthy battery can still leave you stranded if the charging system isn't replenishing the battery correctly.
Conversely, abnormal charging can also damage a battery.
The charging system includes several components and the exact arrangement varies between motorcycles, so diagnosis should follow the correct service procedure.
If charging-system trouble is suspected, don't assume one component is responsible simply because it's the one you've heard fails most often.
Test first. Replace second.
A parasitic—or key-off—draw is electrical current being consumed while the motorcycle is switched off.
Some current draw may be completely normal depending on the motorcycle and equipment fitted.
The question is whether the draw is appropriate.
Finding an excessive drain can require methodical electrical testing.
Common areas worth considering include aftermarket accessories and equipment that's been added or modified, but factory systems can also require diagnosis.
This isn't a job where guessing pays.
Modern motorcycles often accumulate electrical accessories over the years.
A USB socket here. A sat-nav connection there. Then perhaps heated clothing, auxiliary lights, an alarm or a tracker.
Individually, each may be perfectly satisfactory.
Problems can arise from poor installation, inappropriate connections or equipment that continues drawing power when the motorcycle is parked.
If a battery problem began after an accessory was fitted, that information is highly relevant.
Eventually batteries wear out.
Warning signs can include:
If a battery is physically damaged, treat it appropriately and don't continue using it simply to see how long it lasts.
Replacement batteries need to be appropriate for the motorcycle.
Physical dimensions are only part of the specification.
Terminal arrangement, battery technology and electrical characteristics also matter.
Choose a battery specified for the application rather than one that merely fits in the battery tray.
AGM batteries are widely used in motorcycles and offer good starting performance with a sealed, low-maintenance design.
For many riders, a quality application-correct AGM battery remains a straightforward choice.
Lithium motorcycle batteries can offer substantial weight savings and strong cranking performance in an appropriately specified application.
They also have different charging and temperature characteristics from conventional lead-acid batteries.
If considering lithium, check compatibility with the motorcycle, charging system, charger or maintenance charger, and the way and conditions in which the motorcycle is used.
Don't treat lithium as simply a lighter drop-in version of every lead-acid battery.
The important part isn't the exact numbering. It's the principle: start with the simple, likely and easily verified possibilities before replacing expensive components.

Potentially, depending on how the accessory is designed and wired. If an electrical problem begins after accessories have been fitted, include them in the investigation.

If there's reason to suspect a charging fault, investigate it. A new battery won't repair a defective charging system.
Electrical faults have a reputation for being mysterious.

The difficulty usually comes from trying to diagnose several possibilities at once.
A motorcycle that won't start doesn't automatically need a battery. A battery that keeps going flat doesn't automatically mean the charging system has failed. And a clicking starter doesn't automatically mean the starter motor is faulty.
Start with what you know. Check the battery and connections. Test rather than guess. Then follow the evidence.
That approach isn't as dramatic as swapping components until the motorcycle starts. It's usually considerably cheaper.
A healthy battery can spend years being almost completely ignored.
It's only when the motorcycle refuses to start that we suddenly remember how much we depend on it.
If your Harley-Davidson develops starting problems, resist the temptation to immediately order a battery—or a starter motor, regulator or anything else.
Look at the symptoms. Check the simple things. Establish whether the battery is properly charged and capable of doing its job. Then determine whether the motorcycle is keeping it charged.
A few logical checks can often separate a straightforward battery problem from something that requires deeper investigation.
And if you're not comfortable carrying out electrical diagnosis yourself, there's nothing wrong with getting someone experienced to test it.
Sometimes the cheapest component you can fit is the one you discover you didn't need.
