Brake pads are a relatively small component, but choosing the right type can make a noticeable difference to the way a Harley-Davidson feels under braking.
Look through a range of replacement motorcycle brake pads and you are likely to encounter terms such as organic, sintered, semi-metallic and semi-sintered. They describe different types of friction material, each with its own characteristics.
There is no single brake pad compound that is automatically best for every motorcycle or every rider. The right choice depends on the bike, the braking system, how it is ridden and the type of response the rider prefers.

Riders who repeatedly generate higher brake temperatures may benefit from the greater temperature resistance of a suitable sintered compound.
The important word is suitable. Race pads and highly specialised compounds should not automatically be assumed to be appropriate for a road motorcycle.

And because brakes are a safety-critical system, pad replacement should never be treated as simply fitting a new set and forgetting everything around them. The discs, calipers, fluid and general condition of the braking system deserve attention at the same time.
