For many years, the clutch cable was one of the most familiar controls on a Harley-Davidson.
Pull the lever and the inner cable moves through its outer housing, operating the clutch release mechanism. Release the lever and the cable returns.
Simple.
But clutch cables are available in different lengths, finishes and constructions, and problems can arise surprisingly quickly if the wrong cable is fitted or routed incorrectly.
Handlebar changes make correct cable selection particularly important.
On a cable-operated clutch, the clutch lever pulls an inner cable.
That movement is transferred through the cable to the clutch release mechanism, allowing the clutch plates to separate when required.
For the system to work correctly, the cable has to move smoothly and have the correct amount of adjustment.
Too much slack can prevent the clutch releasing fully.
Too little can prevent it engaging properly.
Both situations can cause problems.
Clutch cables should be inspected periodically rather than waiting for one to snap.
Warning signs can include:
A cable with broken or fraying strands should not be treated as something to keep an eye on indefinitely.
It is already failing.
A heavy clutch lever does not automatically mean the cable itself is faulty.
Possible causes include:
This is why simply fitting a new cable does not guarantee a light lever.
The entire operating system needs to move freely.
A clutch cable needs a smooth route between the handlebar lever and clutch mechanism.
Sharp bends increase friction and can make the clutch feel heavier.
The cable must also remain free as the handlebars move from full left lock to full right lock.
It should not:
Routing can be particularly important on motorcycles with non-standard handlebars or risers.
Installing taller, wider or differently shaped handlebars changes the distance and route between the clutch lever and the rest of the motorcycle.
The original cable may become too short.
It is also possible to go too far in the opposite direction. A cable that is much longer than required may have to be routed through unnecessary loops or tight bends.
There is no reliable rule that says, for example, adding six inches of handlebar rise always means fitting a cable six inches longer.
Riser height, bar width, pullback, control position and cable routing all affect the required length.
Measure the actual installation.
Replacement clutch cables are commonly available in:
Designed to replace the original cable on a substantially standard motorcycle.
Useful where handlebars or risers require additional cable length.
Extended cables are often offered in several increments, but the correct one still needs to be determined from the actual motorcycle.
For significantly modified motorcycles, a custom-length cable can be the best solution.
This avoids trying to force an unsuitable standard cable into a highly modified installation.
Cable finish is largely a matter of appearance provided the cable itself is correctly specified.
Common options include:
A traditional black cable can disappear neatly into a standard-looking motorcycle.
Braided cables are popular on custom builds, particularly where brake lines and throttle cables use a matching finish.
Appearance should come after correct fitment, however.
A beautiful cable of the wrong length is still the wrong cable.
This depends on the cable.
Many quality aftermarket cables use low-friction liners. The cable manufacturer's instructions should therefore be followed rather than assuming that every clutch cable needs to be filled with conventional cable oil.
For example, lined cables may require little or no internal lubrication, while cable-end fittings and pivots can still need appropriate attention.
Heavy oils or grease inside some lined cables can attract dirt and may not be recommended.
The correct lubricant, if one is required, depends on the cable construction.
A perfectly good clutch cable can still feel poor if the lever pivot is dry, worn or damaged.
When inspecting the cable, also check:
Small amounts of wear at several points can combine to produce a poor clutch action.
A cable-operated clutch requires the correct adjustment.
If there is excessive free play, pulling the lever may not move the release mechanism far enough to disengage the clutch completely.
Possible symptoms include:
Too little free play creates a different problem.
The clutch may not be able to engage completely, potentially causing slipping and accelerated wear.
Correct adjustment therefore matters to both operation and clutch life.
The actual specification and procedure should be taken from the relevant service information for the particular motorcycle and clutch arrangement.
A cable that requires frequent readjustment deserves investigation.
Possible causes include:
Do not repeatedly take up adjustment without investigating why it is changing.
Whenever handlebars, risers or controls are changed, operate the steering fully in both directions before riding.
Check the clutch cable alongside:
Nothing should tighten, pull or interfere with steering movement.
Start the motorcycle only once the controls have been checked carefully.
Not every Harley-Davidson uses a clutch cable.
Hydraulic clutch systems use fluid pressure rather than a mechanical cable and have different servicing requirements.
When ordering parts, first establish whether the motorcycle has a cable-operated or hydraulic clutch.
This sounds obvious, but model changes, conversions and modified motorcycles can make assumptions unreliable.
If the clutch is dragging, slipping or difficult to operate, resist the temptation to blame the cable automatically.
The problem could be elsewhere in the clutch assembly.
Likewise, fitting an "easy pull" device is not necessarily a cure for an underlying fault. Anything that alters the leverage or movement of the clutch release system needs to provide sufficient clutch travel.
Correct diagnosis comes first.
Before ordering, establish:
On a substantially standard motorcycle, a model-specific replacement cable is normally straightforward.
On a custom motorcycle, measuring what is actually required is far more reliable than assuming the original specification still applies.
A clutch cable is mechanically simple, but correct length, routing and adjustment make a substantial difference to how it works.
Inspect the cable before it reaches the point of failure. Look particularly carefully around the ends, adjuster and areas where the cable bends.
After handlebar modifications, do not assume the standard cable will still be suitable.
And if a clutch action suddenly becomes heavier, rougher or more difficult to adjust, investigate the cause rather than simply accepting it as part of riding an older motorcycle.
A correctly specified and properly routed clutch cable should operate smoothly, consistently and without interfering with the steering throughout its full range of movement.
