Fork seals and fork oil are easy to overlook until there is an obvious leak or the front suspension starts to feel different. Both play an important part in how the forks move, control the front wheel and keep the motorcycle stable under braking and over uneven roads.
A small amount of oil around a fork leg can quickly turn into a bigger problem if it is ignored, particularly if the oil finds its way onto the front brake. Understanding what the seals do, why they fail and what should be checked during a repair can help prevent further wear.
The fork seal sits around the fork tube and keeps the fork oil inside the fork while allowing the tube to slide through the lower leg as the suspension moves.
The seal has to cope with constant movement, changes in temperature, road dirt and small amounts of contamination carried on the fork tube. A separate dust seal is normally fitted above it to help keep dirt away from the oil seal itself.
